Baylor Men’s and Women’s Basketball Both Ranked #2 in the Country

Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports

With the release of the latest AP Top 25 polls for both men’s and women’s basketball, Baylor has achieved something truly extraordinary: Both the men’s team and the women’s team are #2 in the country. And after one of the most exciting weeks in Baylor sports history, it’s easy to see why they are both so highly ranked.

On the men’s side, Scott Drew and his team made it through the toughest week of scheduling they’ll face the entire regular season: they knocked off #22 Texas Tech in Lubbock, 57-52, and then blew out #3 Kansas in Lawrence, 67-55. That was the first win in Lawrence for Scott Drew and Baylor. The win also ended a 28 home game winning streak for the Jayhawks. The men are now 13-1 on the season with an NCAA best 5 ranked wins. Their only loss was a two point defeat in Alaska to Washington, a game they led almost the entire time. They are only 7 points behind #1 Gonzaga in this week’s poll.

On the women’s side, Kim Mulkey and the Lady Bears also captured a historic victory, defeating #1 UConn on the road. This win by Baylor halted a 98 game home winning streak for the UConn women. And the Lady Bears did it in decisive fashion, winning 74-58. They capped off the week with a 94-48 victory over Oklahoma State. The Lady Bears rest only 13 points behind #1 South Carolina in the latest poll and also boast a 13-1 record. Their one loss came to, you guessed it, South Carolina. But that was while star Lauren Cox was out with an injury. With Cox back in the rotation, Baylor looks nearly unbeatable.

You can next appreciate these two electric teams at home in the Ferrell Center when the men host Iowa State this Wednesday and the women host #17 West Virginia this Saturday. Who knows, maybe soon this article will be rewritten with two #1 basketball teams?
