Campbell said Iowa State’s selection to the Alamo Bowl proves that people are paying attention.

“It says a lot about the character of the young men in our program,” Campbell said. “I’m just really proud of our kids but I do think it’s a big step forward.”

Getting a chance to face coach Mike Leach and his high-powered offense led by quarterback Gardner Minshew, a Heisman contender, gives the Cyclones another shot to show that the program’s turnaround is not novelty.

“It’s definitely good for the culture here — good for the program to let the guys know and let the coaches around this program know that it can be done,” Iowa State cornerback Brian Peavy said.
