USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg breaks down the latest Amway Coaches Poll
Now we wait.
The Alabama-LSU showdown has loomed over the College Football Playoff projections since the Tigers beat Texas in Week 2. The winner was likely to take the SEC West and be favored to make the field. The loser would still be in the race with just one loss. After weeks of speculation, the outcome is at hand. And then the picture will get better focus.
On the field last week, the significant development was victories by Pac-12 leaders Oregon and Utah. Should both the Ducks and Utes both continue unscathed until the conference title game, the winner will have a strong case when invitations are handed out on Dec. 7.
HEISMAN WATCH: Ohio State’s Chase Young surges into contention
For now, LSU slots into the No. 4 position with Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State forecasted to win their conferences. But how the game goes Saturday between the Tigers and Crimson Tide will be critical to whether the Pac-12 or Oklahoma can factor into the mix come December or we’ll see two SEC teams in the field for the second time in three seasons.
A reminder: Some conferences may not fulfill their bowl allotment. Asterisks denote a replacement pick.
