AMES, Ia. – Ashley Joens made the most of her opportunity with USA Basketball last season, first earning a spot as an alternate before playing her way into a significant role during the 2018 FIBA Americas Women’s Championships.
She’s trying to do it all again this year.
Joens was named an alternate for USA Basketball’s U19 World Cup Team. She was among 30 athletes to receive an invite to the team trials. The trials produce the 12-member team for the competition, which takes play July 20-28 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Joens won’t compete with the team as an alternate unless she is called up. The good news for Joens is that she’s proven herself in that role before.
She was an alternate last year for USA Basketball before receiving a call. When Joens arrived, she made the most of the shot, averaging 10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
Joens is coming off a strong freshman season at Iowa State in which she averaged 11.7 points and five rebounds per game.
