Iowa State still must convince national experts that it’s a football program to be respected

AMES, Ia. — The three finalists for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end in college football, were revealed Monday.
Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell thought the list was missing one important name: Cyclones tight end Charlie Kolar.
“I really don’t know how you select those, but it’s too bad,” Campbell said during his weekly news conference Tuesday. “The reality of it is, we think the best tight end in the country resides here in Ames, Iowa, and I think Charlie would take coach Campbell’s blessing (more) than he would some voter.”
The sophomore had been named a semifinalist for the award and was making a compelling case to win it. Among FBS tight ends, he ranks fifth in receiving yards per game (59.0), fourth in receptions (47) and is tied for fifth touchdown catches (seven). Kolar broke Iowa State’s single season mark for receiving yards by a tight end with 649 and is rated the second-best tight end national by Pro Football Focus.
But that resume wasn’t enough to move him onto the final round of voting, which is completed confidentially by the aaward’s selection committee. Instead, he was passed over for Florida Atlantic’s Harrison Bryant, Washington’s Hunter Bryant and Miami’s Brevin Jordan. Only one of those players has more receptions than Kolar and none of them had as many touchdowns as the Iowa State star.
Campbell believes Kolar may have been snubbed.
“I would say disappointing because you can probably put all the stats of the guys that are up for that award, and I don’t know if they collectively match Charlie’s,” Campbell.
Campbell wasn’t the only person to support Kolar, though. Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy said he was just as confused by the news that Kolar wasn’t named a finalist.
“I feel like he really did deserve it — just statistically and obviously his highlights and stuff are pretty awesome,” the sophomore quarterback said.
