AMES, Ia. — Marial Shayok is a consensus first-team all-Big 12 Conference selection. The Associated Press’ media poll listed him on the first team Wednesday, two days after the coaches selected him to be a first-teamer.
The Virginia transfer goes into the Big 12 tournament with an 18.7 scoring average — No. 2 in the league. Iowa State faces Baylor at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
Shayok missed last week’s game at West Virginia because of a sprained little toe, but played 31 sometimes painful minutes last Saturday against Texas Tech.
“That last 10 minutes, they did some things to help him get through the game,” coach Steve Prohm said on the Big 12 teleconference Monday. “The foot did start bothering him a little bit.”
Shayok is expected to play on Thursday.
“He’s had a huge impact on our team,” Prohm said. “His stat line has been really good. He would have had a good chance for Big 12 Player of the Year, if these last three weeks didn’t kind of tumble down the stretch.”
