NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — One of the Midwest’s most versatile forwards, four-star Milwaukee product Jamari Sibley has enjoyed a successful Peach Jam so far with Phenom University.
In May, the 6-foot-7 prospect released a top 10 of Georgetown, Florida, South Carolina, Marquette, Iowa State, Iowa, Syracuse, Maryland, Wake Forest and Minnesota. He told USA TODAY Sports that he hasn’t narrowed that list and is still considering all 10 schools.
“But after my officials,” Sibley said, “I’ll probably start to narrow my list down.”
Sibley hasn’t taken any official visits and plans to start scheduling those after Peach Jam. He doesn’t know which schools he’ll want to visit, but he may lean toward using the officials on programs farther from home, such as Georgetown, South Carolina and Maryland.
He has taken unofficial visits to Marquette, Iowa and Minnesota.
Here is Sibley’s take on the latest with his recruitment.
How is your relationship with Iowa State?
“They really love me. They always say they’re here for me and that they want me there, and that I’ll fit in well in that program. And they tell me that like every day. Every day. It’s a good school.”
What appeals to you about the Cyclones?
“A lot of guys from Milwaukee, where I’m from, they go there. So they got a lot of ties to Milwaukee. And I hear from Tyrese (Haliburton) that it’s a great program. He loves it. He’s got a lot of love back home. Everybody loves him.”
Is Iowa also recruiting you hard?
“Iowa and Iowa State are on me heavy. It’s like an Iowa rivalry.”
What appeals to you about Iowa?
“They’ve been on me for a minute. They have a great program. They get guys stronger, too — I’ve got to get stronger. They bulk them up. And they’ve got a great coaching staff.”
What do you remember from your unofficial visit to Iowa as a freshman?
“Just being around the guys, seeing the facilities, seeing how they work at practice. And it’s like a dome — the arena’s like a dome. That’s nice. They were just all good guys.”
How is your relationship with Marquette?
“They’re just like the other schools. They’re on me hard. They’ve been wanting me to come to campus and visit a lot. It’s my hometown school, and they’ve got a great team. Every game you go to, it’s sold out. Packed, man. And they play at the Fizerv Forum, so a lot of fans come out.”
What will be the biggest factors in your decision?
“That’s a good question. Just a school that’s going to let me be me — not try to change me. Just they want me for me and are going to get me stronger and ready for the next level, and give me knowledge.”
Do you have a time in mind for when you want to commit?
“Probably in about 3-4 months.”
