KYLE, Texas– The Kansas State women’s golf team made a four-spot improvement from the first round to the second round at the Texas State Invitational on Monday held at the par-71, 6,059-yard Plum Creek Country Club.
The Wildcats were in 10thplace following the first round but made an 11-stroke improvement in round two to enter Tuesday’s final round in sixth place at 11-over par 579. K-State is just two strokes away from a tie for fourth and three shy of third-place Oral Roberts.
“We were unable to score in round one,” head coach Kristi Knight said, “but we bounced back in round two and holed some putts. I am proud of the patience the ladies showed today. It was kind of cold and rainy, but it is great to be outside on the course.”
Sophomore Ella Adams paced the Cats on day one with a 2-over par 144. The Adelaide, Australia, native is currently knotted up in 18th place but is just two strokes from a tie for seventh. She is joined in the top 20 by senior Chloe Weir, who trails Adams by one stroke. Weir is tied for 20that 3-over par 145, which included a birdie on her final hole of the day.
Following Adams and Weir were sophomores Niamh McSherry and Reid Isaac, who are each tied for 33rdat 5-over par 147.McSherry’s day included a 2-under par 69 in the second round.Freshman Briony Bayles rounded out the scoring by shooting a 6-over par 148 to tie for 42ndplace.
“I am very proud of Niamh today,” Knight said. “She got sick on Saturday night and did not play the practice round. She came out today and stayed patient with herself in round one. She just kept playing and eventually found her rhythm. She hit it close several times and holed the putts to shoot 2-under in round two.”
UTSA leads the field at 1-over par 569, one stroke ahead of host school Texas State. Hannah Alberto of Sam Houston State is atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under par 138.
The Texas State Invitational concludes Tuesday with an 8:15 a.m., shotgun start for the final round. Live results of can be followed at www.birdiefire.com.
