Despite uneven play, an easy schedule has guided the Wildcats into December with only one loss. Today, we’ll see how K-State handles a road game against a middling SEC squad.
Kansas State (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) visits the Vanderbilt Commodores (3-4, 0-0 SEC). This is the first leg of a two-game series which was arranged along with the home-and-home in football, but there will be no return game in Manhattan; the second game will be next year at Sprint Center in Kansas City. K-State leads the series between the schools 5-4, but all three of those Vandy wins have been in Nashville against only one K-State victory. Most recently, the ‘Dores won 82-76 in 1994.
Vanderbilt has played a hell-spawned schedule thus far, eating losses at Belmont, at home against Southern Cal, and in the NIT Tip-Off to Virginia and Seton Hall. Bryce Drew is the man in charge of the Commodores; he’s not just Scott Drew’s brother, he’s responsible for one of the greatest March Madness moments ever.
The home squad will be playing with heavy hearts today, as Perry Wallace passed away Friday. Wallace, who was an All-SEC post player for the Commodores, broke the SEC basketball color barrier on December 2, 1967 — fifty years ago yesterday. There were already events scheduled today to honor that milestone; expect them to be even more intense now.
Vegas thinks K-State is the better team, but not by much; because the game is in Nashville, Vanderbilt is favored by one. The over is 137, so Vegas is looking for a 69-68 Vandy win in a thriller. OddsShark’s computers, on the other hand, predict a K-State blowout on the 80-62 level, so who knows?
