SLATE: Tennis escapes Arizona

And the only XFL team you care about won.

It’s a really boring Monday, and there are only two things to talk about today.

First, in Tucson yesterday, Maria Linares came back after dropping the first set 4-6 to Talya Zandberg by winning 6-3 in the second and a thrilling 7-5 in the third. That was important, because it was the final match of the day, and it gave Kansas State (5-2) a 4-3 win over Arizona to complete a sweep of their weekend meetings in the desert.

The Wildcats, who have bounced back in fine fashion after that rocky trip to Durham in late January, will only have one match this week as #14 Washington comes to town on Friday.

The other news of the day is that the New York Guardians beat the snot out of the Tampa Bay Vipers yesterday, cruising to a 23-3 victory at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. We care about this because there are only two Kansas State alumni playing in the XFL, and they’re both Guardians. Ryan Mueller recorded a tackle and an assist, while Matthew McCrane popped a 49-yard field goal just before halftime to extend New York’s lead to 17-0.

Corbin McGuire is gone, but he still had one in the chamber as he caught up with McCrane last week prior to his XFL debut.
