Three Wildcats Open Play in NBA G-League This Weekend

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Former Kansas State men’s basketball players – Barry Brown, Jr. (Iowa Wolves), D.J. Johnson (Santa Cruz Warriors) and Dean Wade (Canton Charge) – will all open play for their respective NBA G-League teams this weekend.
Brown, who plays for G-League affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves, tips the action off at 7 p.m., CT on Friday, as his Iowa Wolves host the Sioux Falls Skyforce at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Johnson, who plays for the G-League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, plays against the Stockton Kings at 9 p.m., CT on Friday at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, California.
Wade, who signed a two-way contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in early July, opens play with the Canton Charge at 6 p.m., CT on Saturday against the Lakeland Magic at the Canton Memorial Civic Center in Canton, Ohio. As a two-way player, Wade can spend up to 45 days with the Cavaliers during the regular season while playing a majority of the time with the Charge.
Brown played in seven games during the Las Vegas Summer League for the Timberwolves, which lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in the Championship game. He averaged 8.0 points on 40 percent shooting (20-of-50) to go with 2.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals in 16.6 minutes per game. He scored a tournament-high 14 points against the Dallas Mavericks in the first round the Summer League playoffs on July 13 before registering 12 points and 3 rebounds in the loss to the Grizzlies in the Championship game on July 15.
Brown will play with some familiar faces, as the Wolves’ roster includes former Big 12 foes Brandone Francis (Texas Tech) and Lindell Wigginton (Iowa State), along with Tyus Battle (Syracuse), Keita Bates-Diop (Ohio State), Jordan McLaughin (USC), Jordan Murphy (Minnesota) and Naz Reid (LSU).
Wade played in five games during Cavaliers’ Summer League in both Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. He averaged 9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals in two games in the Salt Lake City Summer League before averaging 5.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals in three games in the Las Vegas Summer League.
Wade will also play alongside some familiar players with the Charge, including Malik Newman (Kansas) and Alex Robinson (TCU), on a roster that also includes Marques Bolden (Duke), Tyler Cook (Iowa) and J.P. Macura (Xavier).
Johnson, who played for the Wildcats from 2012-17, joined the Warriors as a free agent after playing internationally the past two seasons, including stops in Greece, South Korea and Japan. He averaged 6.1 points on 60.3 percent shooting with 3.3 rebounds in playing in 17 games for GS Lavrio in Greece in 2017-18 before averaging 4.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in 18 games for Mobis Phoebus in South Korea in 2018-19. He had recently signed with Bambitious Nara in Japan before joining the Warriors.
The Warriors’ roster includes Vander Blue (Marquette), Ky Bowman (Boston College), Andrew Harrison (Kentucky), Damion Lee (Louisville) and Devyn Marble (Iowa), along with former Kansas player Kevin Young.
