ATHENS, Ga. – The Kansas State men’s golf trio of Jacob Eklund, Jeremy Gandon and Roland Massimino found themselves with room to improve following the first round of the NCAA Athens Regional on Monday at the par 71, 7,253-yard University of Georgia Golf Course.
Eklund tallied the best score among the three, as the Carbondale, Illinois product finished the round at 3-over par 74 and in a tie for 32nd. Eklund birdied No. 6 and bogeyed No. 9 before a 3-over par back nine. Massimino entered the tournament as the No. 1 ranked individual in the field, as well as the 100th ranked player in the country. After a rough front nine of 5-over par, the Lumberville, Pennsylvania, native settled down and finished the day at 5-over par 76 in a tie for 50th.
Gandon equaled Massimino’s round of 76 as he recorded a pair of birdies on the day.
“It was a bit of a struggle today,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “The course played pretty tough, and the guys made some big numbers that made it hard to get anything going. This course puts a premium on driving, and I didn’t think they were as sharp in that aspect today. I’m confident they will bounce back tomorrow.”
Memphis’ Brad Bawden is atop the leaderboard after round one, shooting a 3-under par 68. Will Gordon of Vanderbilt and Georgia’s duo of Spencer Ralston and Davis Thompson sit one stroke behind Bawden and in a tie for second.
The second round of the NCAA Athens Regional tees off on Tuesday with Massimino starting at 9:20 a.m. (ET), followed by Eklund and Gandon at 9:31 a.m. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com
