Best I Ever Had

Mike Gundy had some glowing remarks on Mike Yurcich and some fond memories of his hiring.

“(Yurcich) was at Shippensburg! I found him on the internet. It’s worked out great, and the reason I did that is because I had Larry Fedora, Dana Holgorsen and Todd Monken. They were here either one or two years, and all of them went to be head coaches. I didn’t think that was productive for our organization. I knew if I went out and got a big-name guy and brought him in here and we had success like we have, he’d be gone. I looked for a guy nobody knew about, but he also had to fit the criteria. That wasn’t easy.

“It was funny. I got emails from the brass here on campus. They were like, ‘Seriously?’ Everybody was scared to death. The media was blowing me up. Everybody was, and he’s probably the best one I’ve ever had.” [The Athletic $]

Most were skeptical. What successful coach goes down into the Pennsylvania coal mines to find a gem like Yurcich? But the consistently high performing offense has been hard to argue with. It doesn’t feel like Yurcich has been Gundy’s best OC but not sure numbers would support that.

Step Two

While signing a big man over the weekend was a good step, what’s next?

A need at remains at point guard, given (Brandon) Averette’s transfer and the graduation of Kendall Smith. OSU is among the teams interested in 4-star point guard Courtney Ramey, as well as a bevy of other possibilities. The Cowboys are heavily involved in the graduated transfer market as (Mike) Boynton scours for ways to improve his roster. With four remaining open scholarships, he has the possibility of doing so in short order. [NewsOK]

Ramey would be a great match, a high school player with lots of eligibility. But a grad transfer to fill Averette’s shoes at the least or provide some high-end point guard play that Smith provided at best, that’s what’s most pressing.

OSU and NCAA Notes

The seven-tourney steak ended but the Pokes had an incredible round yesterday to surge into contention….Great Q&A with Big 12 commissioner Bowlsby – says football championship game was a success….CBS’ Dennis Dodd says it’s the beginning of the end for the kickoff in college football….CRFF nailed it with the OU trademarking – Boynton tweetfest over the weekend

Pokes take the series after dropping Saturday’s game.

How many sports could this team have competed for a Big 12 championship in?

Does Deion owe like a dozen positive, encouraging conversations to offset the NCAA-eligibility ruining ones? (obviously kidding)

Would love for the Pokes to implement this every year. Would have to be racing Justice this year, right?

It sounds like Carroll had himself one heck of an outing, helping his team win the Portsmouth Invitational.
