Big Russ Changing the Game
Cowboy great Russell Okung went on a pretty epic Twitter rant earlier this week with an aim to change the NFL contract system – removing unguaranteed contracts.
The reason NFL contracts are structured this way is largely because that’s the way it has always been done. If Chargers left tackle Russell Okung gets his way, however, unguaranteed contracts will become a thing of the past as soon as 2020, when the current collective bargaining agreement expires.
Okung made an impassioned Twitter argument about guaranteed contracts on Tuesday, noting that it will be up to the NFLPA to insist on making fully guaranteed contracts a negotiating point in the next round of CBA negotiations. [CBS Sports]
A trendsetter who negotiated his own contract in Denver without an agent, Okung is touching on a reasonable subject. The article cites only one veteran with a completely guaranteed multiyear deal. With (not relative to NBA money) massive deals being signed, why not just force rationality by making all deals guaranteed? You could put reasonable contingencies and have a more reasonable market for players.
I’ll take the odds that this guy ends up as the head of the NFLPA at some point.
(NFL GUARANTEED MONEY THREAD)
I will never understand how billionaire team owners have convinced the public that the players, who put their bodies on the line every week and make less than 50% of league revenue, are the “ungrateful” ones.

No. 5 is Top Five
USAToday looked at college football’s top running backs in 2018 and Justice Hill made the list.
5. Justice Hill, Oklahoma State
Maybe it’s because of Mason Rudolph and James Washington. Maybe it’s because few pay enough attention to Oklahoma State. But Hill has often been spectacular since grabbing the job one month into his freshman season. He’s also reliable: Hill gained at least 86 yards in every game but two last fall, ending up with a Big 12 Conference-best 1,467 yards and 15 touchdowns. [USA Today]
I don’t think it’s that people don’t see OSU – it’s that they were staring at the other dominant aspect of the offense. Freshman having dominant seasons aren’t that crazy – anybody remember Mike Hamilton? – but getting better and better with consistency is worth noting.

Coach with the jokes, happy (late) birthday No. 21!

I think you could substitute Oklahoma State for Arkansas here. The best (only?) example of non-elite recruiting that led to titles here.
SEC fans care too much about recruiting. Arkansas is never going to recruit competitively with the big dogs, they need another strategy. It’s the Aggies trying to “do as the Romans do.”
Arkansas can’t get the best players but they can get the right ones. https://t.co/5mGFKJ52jS
