Daily Bullets (July 9): Gundy’s Texas Record, Wolff’s Bounty for Winning the 3M Open

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”
– Michael Jordan

Bullets Rundown

• A common thread between Yurcich and Gleeson
• Wolff’s bounty for winning the 3M Open
• Gundy’s Texas record

OSU Bullets

• If you’re looking for a trend in Mike Gundy’s offensive coordinator hires, here’s a great one.

That and the fact that (Sean Gleeson’s) last two quarterbacks, Chad Kanoff in 2017 and John Lovett in ’18, became Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year playing two different ways — Kanoff dropped back and threw the ball, while Lovett was just as likely to run with it.

“I’m coming here to bring what I know about quarterback development to a really successful offense,” Gleeson said. “That’s kind of been the narrative, to blend those two things together.” [TulsaWorld]

Mike Yurcich had the same flexibility – winning the D2-Heisman with a dual-threat then cleaning house with Mason Rudolph.

Matthew Wolff made himself known to all in the room by winning his third PGA event as a professional – and there were plenty of other benefits to his win as well.

The win puts Wolff in a great position to start his professional career. In addition to a first-place check, Wolff now qualifies for this year’s FexEx Cup Playoffs, holds a PGA Tour card through the 2020-21 season, and has an exemption into the field for the 2020 Players Championship, Masters and PGA Championship.

And he did it all on a sponsor’s exemption. [NCAA.com]

$1m+ and entry into all the golf he can handle sounds like quite the relief for a guy just getting started. He’s defying all statistics – as a recent college dropout, the poor guy can probably sell his futon and beanbag chair now, right?

• Looking over Mike Gundy’s record against his Big 12 peers was interesting and I was probably most surprised by his record against Texas.

Gundy struggled against Texas in his first five seasons as head coach. He lost all five games by a combined margin of 79 points. His first win against the Longhorns came in his sixth season when the Cowboys traveled to Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in 2010 to beat Texas 33-16. OSU is 7-2 against Texas since the 2010 season and is currently on a four-game winning streak against the Longhorns. [TulsaWorld]

If you told me in 05′ when Gundy was hired that he would be .500 against Texas, I’d say that’s a really solid starting point for a coach. 7-2, since Colt McCoy left, is capitalizing on a blueblood being down.

• Cowgirl Soccer added four new players in the 2019 recruiting class

Pretty unimpressive move here by Les Miles – reinstated a player (Big 12 offensive freshman of the year) with a domestic assault charge after a one-game suspension.

• This seems like a neat event to honor a great guy – the Brooks Thompson golf tournament.
