Oklahoma State Men’s Golf wins 14th NCAA Regional

The Cowboys are headed to the NCAA Men’s Golf Finals

The Oklahoma State golf team added another win to their already record-breaking 13 Regional titles today as they took the Louisville Regional at the University of Louisville Golf Club.

The Cowboys would end the final round at 7-under which would bring them to 14-under for the tournament, four strokes ahead of second place Auburn.

It wasn’t necessarily an easy win though. While the Pokes were all but destined to get to the final with a 9-shot lead ahead of fifth place (top-5 advance) it wasn’t as set and stone that they’d get the win. Heading into the final round they were two-strokes behind leader Auburn. The Cowboys would see themselves in a back and forth battle with Auburn and conference foe Baylor all day. At one point there was a three-way tie between them. However the Cowboys were able to come up with a clutch back nine and get the win.

Two words: tweet tweet.

Look at all that red.

Viktor Hovland played a solid tournament finishing tied for second alongside Connecticut’s Jimmy Hervol, Arizona’s Trevor Werbylo and Louisville’s Matthias Schmid. He was 6-under on the tournament and 1-under in the final round. Iowa State’s Tripp Kinney would get the individual win after shooting a 7-under for the tournament.

Matthew Wolff would have a bit of a disappointing tournament shooting one-under on the tournament with six bogeys in the final round. He would redeem himself though with two straight birdies on 17 & 18 to end the day and put the Cowboys in the lead. He cleaned up his game at the posting a -4 on the back nine today overall. That was a massive improvement from the +5 he had on the back nine in the first round.

Austin Eckroat posted a clean card in the final round with no bogeys and a score of 67. This was the lowest score for the Pokes on day 3.

If you would have told me that the Cowboys would have been able to pull this off earlier this morning I would have laughed at you. It just goes to show that this team has grit and can rally. When you’re the reigning champs, you don’t just make it to the finals, you win you’re Regional by 4-strokes.

While winning a Regional doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, this has to build the confidence of the Cowboys heading to the Finals in Fayetteville. Also, Oklahoma State now owns the record for Regional wins by six. Texas is the next closest with eight after winning the Austin Regional today. Arizona State and Clemson are tied for third with seven Regional wins a piece. This will also be Oklahoma State’s 72nd appearance in the NCAA Finals in their 73 year history as a program.
