One of the best defensive ends in Texas will be putting on the purple for TCU in 2020.
It has been a banner Monday for TCU Football, who scored their third commitment of the day with the announcement of James Sylvester, one of the top players in the state and another exceptional talent out of Newton High School.
We had an inkling this might be coming, as Sylvester was coy with Frogs O’ War on Twitter…

Earlier today, quarterback Eli Williams and running back Dominic Richardson – two of Oklahoma’s top talents – announced their intentions to be a part of TCU’s 2020 signing class. Monday night, they were joined by a third player – four star defensive end James Sylvester – who plays his high school ball at Newton and would be the third Eagle in two years to join the Horned Frogs’ program.
Sylvester is a huge get for the Gary Patterson; at 6’4” and 226 pounds he fits the mold of the defensive wizard’s dream D End. Sylvester doesn’t just look the part, though; as a sophomore, he recorded 82 tackles and eight sacks in leading the Eagles to their first of back to back state championships. As a junior, he notched 100 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and another eight sacks. He’s an absolute terror on an opposing quarterback and lives in the offensive backfield. That’s a good way to make a lot of fans.
Sylvester is listed as a top 15 defensive end and top 40 player in Texas, and makes the cut as a top 300 player nationally. He chose TCU from among 17 offers, including Alabama, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Oklahoma. Not bad company for Patterson and co at all. While the chance to play for a defensive mind the caliber of Patterson was certainly appealing, as was his connection with coaches Jeremy Modkins and Dan Sharp, the opportunity to reunite with high school teammates Darwin Barlow and Josh Foster certainly played a role as well. “They want all of us to play together is what they’ve told me.” So was the influence of his mother, who loved TCU from the beginning.
Sylvester’s commitment means that TCU Football has doubled its recruiting class in just over 24 hours time, as he is the fourth player to announce in the past two days. He is the first defensive lineman to sign on, but with LJ Collier and Ben Banogu off to the NFL, the Frogs are certainly in the market for more pass rushers in this cycle. Sylvester is now the highest-rated commit in a class that features two four star and four three star prospects, adding up to a top 30 class in the country with several more spots to fill.
Watch him crush quarterbacks in the highlights below and welcome this future star to the Frog fam!
