Texas moves on at the Big 12’s soccer tournament after ousting Kansas in penalty kicks

Led by junior goalkeeper Nicole Curry, Texas knocked off Kansas in its opener at the Big 12’s soccer tournament.

Playing on Sunday night at Kansas City’s Swope Soccer Village, Texas bested Kansas with a 3-1 edge in a penalty kick shootout. The Longhorns, who are the tournament’s third seed, and the sixth-seeded Jayhawks played to a scoreless draw through regulation and two overtime sessions.

Kansas outshot Texas 22-16, but Curry registered five saves and stopped two of Kansas’ penalty kicks. Freshman defender Emma Regan also made a key play when she used her foot to deflect a potential goal in the first overtime on a Kansas corner kick.

During penalty kicks, Texas got goals from Emma Jett, Kayra Dollas and Cyera Hintzen.

Texas (13-3-3) will meet West Virginia (12-4-3) on Friday night in the semifinals of the Big 12’s season-ending showcase. Baylor (16-4) and TCU (12-4-3) are set to battle in the other semifinal showdown. The Longhorns are looking to win their first Big 12 tournament title since 2007.
