The Dotted Line: Commitment Q&A with 2020 defensive end Van Fillinger

Corner Canyon (Utah) defensive end Van Fillinger is one of just two out-of-state commitments for the Longhorns. The other is five-star running back Bijan Robinson. Texas signed 10 such prospects in 2019. Fillinger, the third-ranked player from Utah in the 2020 class, is a 6-3, 250-pound three-star hybrid defensive end who can handle double teams and get after the passer. He’s a big, powerful athlete who defensive line coach Oscar Giles and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando hope to mold into a starter after a couple of seasons on campus.

At what age did you fall in love with football?

I’ve loved football ever since I was little and my family would watch on television. I begged my mom to play when I was eight, and she finally let me, and I’ve been in love ever since. I love the family factor in football, and doing whatever you can to win together.

What made Texas your choice?

There were many reasons I chose Texas. Their program is a very good fit for me. The people there are all family. I love the coaching staff and I feel at home when I’m in Texas.

What is the hardest part of the recruiting process?

Saying no to all the coaches that believed in me and offered me a scholarship.

What excites you most about college?

Being able to focus my love more around football, and to fulfill my potential off the field. Moving to a new area is pretty exciting, too.

What word would you use to describe Tom Herman?

Real.

Where do you see yourself playing at Texas?

I see myself as an edge rusher who can move around and stop the run when needed.

What artist would you most like to see live?

Playboi Carti or Maxo Kream.

Favorite movie?

“Scarface.”

Favorite athlete of all time?

Mike Tyson

Favorite sport to watch other than football?

Basketball.
