Oklahoma State routs Lady Raiders in Big 12 opener

Senior center Kaylee Jensen had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Big 12 season scoring leader Loryn Goodwin scored 20 as No. 24 Oklahoma State rallied from a second-quarter deficit to rout Texas Tech 98-57 Thursday night in a women’s basketball conference opener.

Oklahoma State (10-2, 1-0) won its fourth game in a row, and Tech (6-6, 0-1) had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Lady Raiders gave their fans at United Supermarkets Arena hope, leading 26-21 five minutes before halftime before the Cowgirls asserted themselves.

The 6-foot-4 Jensen finished six points short of her career high. Goodwin started 1 for 6 from the field and twice missed two of three free throws after being fouled on 3-point attempts, but the speedy left-handed guard ended up near her Big 12-leading average of 22 a game.

Recee Caldwell paced Tech with 20 points, followed by Brielle Blaire and Brittany Brewer with eight apiece. The Lady Raiders committed a season-high 26 turnovers.

Tech came in out-rebounding opponents by an average of 12 per game, but Oklahoma State hurt the Lady Raiders with 18 offensive rebounds, leading to a 24-5 edge in second-chance points.

Tech led midway through the second quarter but was undone by an extended cold spell. Over a stretch of 20 possessions, the Lady Raiders came away with one field goal and 5 for 8 free-throwing shooting. Up 23-21 when the sequence began, the Lady Raiders trailed 47-30 when it ended midway through the third quarter.

Blaire finally snapped the Lady Raiders out of the cold stretch with 3-point goals on back-to-back trips, narrowing the gap to 49-36. Caldwell scored on three consecutive trips shortly thereafter, bringing Tech within 55-43, but it was all Oklahoma State from that point.

Jensen was well on her way to a strong performance with 16 points and eight rebound by halftime. Oklahoma State led 36-28 at the break after the teams traded runs in the first half.

Oklahoma State broke to a 16-7 lead, but Tech responded and went up 26-21 on two Brittany Brewer free throws at 5:08 before halftime. To that point, Goodwin had only four points while shooting 1 for 6 from the field.

The Cowgirls got it going again, though, with Jensen and Goodwin supplying five points apiece to a 10-0 run. Goodwin capped it with a drive and a basket that made it 31-26, prompting Tech to take a timeout at 1:40 before halftime.
