Coming off 3 consecutive series victories against Top 25 opponents, the Mountaineers break into the rankings this week for the first time in 2019.
Your West Virginia Mountaineers are a ranked baseball team. Yeah, you read that right.
After 3 consecutive series victories over then-ranked opponents Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, the Mountaineers have convinced enough sportswriters to include them in the best-of-the-best rankings for this week.
Now, unlike college football and basketball, where the Associated Press (AP) ranking is understood as the poll to follow, college baseball has about 6 different polls, each of which claim to be the best.
Two of those polls, D1Baseball and Baseball America have WVU in the Top 25 as of Monday morning.
D1Baseball puts the Mountaineers at #20 overall, just behind #18 Baylor and #19 TCU, and ahead of #22 Texas Tech. To quote from their page, “West Virginia jumps in at No. 20 after taking two of three from Texas Tech, on the heels of series wins vs. Oklahoma and at Oklahoma State.”
Baseball America has WVU at #25 overall, just sneaking into the rankings. BA has given 4 other Big XII teams a higher rating, putting Texas Tech at #16, Baylor at #19, Texas at #20 and TCU at #22. They make a similar argument to D1Baseball, but also include this tidbit, “Not only did the series win (against TTU) push West Virginia into the rankings, but it also helped solidify a very impressive postseason resume.” LET’S GO!
The official NCAA website hasn’t updated their rankings yet, which is where you’ll find polls for both sites listed above, but also for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA), Collegiate Baseball, RPI, and the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Regardless of where the Mountaineers sit right now, they can always improve. They’ll keep their heads down and keep fighting this week as they take on Penn State and Kansas in two winnable series’.
The NCAA Tournament is within our reach, can we grab it?
